Transfer & Shipment
The transfer and shipment of radioactive materials are strictly regulated by international and national authorities to ensure safety and security. All aspects, from materials classification and packaging to labeling and documentation, must adhere to specific requirements and regulations. At Texas Christian University (TCU), the employment of strong safety and security measures are enforced to protect our community and the environment.
Authorized Users (AUs) and their staff are not permitted to independently transfer, transport, or ship radioactive materials. All such activities must be coordinated through TCU's Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) office. EHS is responsible for authorizing and managing all transfers and shipments to ensure full regulatory compliance. Materials will be delivered to the approved recipient by EHS, with no additional fees incurred beyond standard shipping costs.
If there are any questions regarding shipment or transfer, contact EHS at safety@tcu.edu or 817-257-5395.
On Campus Transfers
Transfer of radioactive materials is only permitted between authorized users. Transfer
recipients must be authorized for the radionuclide, chemical form and quantity of
material they wish to receive. EHS must receive a copy of the On Campus Radioactive
Materials Transfer Form upon completion. For any on campus transfer that requires
vehicle transportation, contact EHS.
Off Campus Transfers/Shipment
The shipment of radioactive material must comply with Department of Transportation
(DOT) and International Air Transportation Association (IATA) regulations. The DOT
regulations and IATA standards require shipping papers, specific markings, hazard
labels, vehicle placards, and emergency response information to accompany shipments.
EHS staff are the only individuals on campus authorized to ship radioactive materials
off campus. EHS requires advanced notice to prepare and ship radioactive materials
and they will work with you to ensure your shipment complies with national and international
regulatory requirements.
